Samsung Electronics has announced plans to acquire Joyent, a provider of public and private cloud solutions as well as the home of Node.js, one of the most widely used application development platforms in contemporary computing. The deal diversifies Samsung’s positioning as a device manufacturer and leader in consumer electronics by giving it access to Joyent’s venerable history of innovation in the cloud computing space. As a result of the acquisition, Samsung stands to significantly strengthen its positioning in the Internet of Things and mobile space and additionally serve as an “anchor tenant customer” for Triton, Joyent’s container as a service solution. The deal promises to differentiate Samsung from competitors and give it enhanced capabilities to scale and innovate within its hardware and consumer electronics business.
